The technique of automatically creating two-dimensional or three-dimensional images from a model using computer programs is called GPU rendering.

Real-time software rendering is used to interactively generate a scene in applications such as 3D computer games, with each frame produced in milliseconds; alternatively, pre-rendering is used to make realistic movies and pictures, with each frame taking many hours or even days to finish.
The primary appeal of software rendering is its capacity. While hardware rendering on GPUs is typically constrained by its current capabilities, software rendering is built using fully configurable programming, is capable of performing any method, and scales over multiple CPU cores and servers.
